1. The film The Power of One really opened my eyes to the fact that discrimination in South American was extremely high during the 1900s. Not only were blacks discriminated against but also the battle between the Afrikaners and the British. As a young boy Peekay was extremely discriminated against because he was raised with a British background. Peekay was sent to an all Afrikaner boarding school were the teachers would preach to the class on how the British were filth. Young Peekay was spit on and bullied by the older boys and told Hitler was coming to destroy all British People. I couldn’t believe how strong Peekay was when all of this was happening to him on top of his mother dieing I think he was one brave little boy. The part of this whole film I found the most disturbing was when Peekay was peed on. This movie was extremely inspiring I really feel like it taught me whatever happens to you in your life you can always change it and think that’s was Peekay did with his life. Peekay is a really inspiring charter I feel because he made it through a lot and never gave up even when he lost so much. Many of the scenes in this movie I found extremely hard to watch especially when Geel Peat was beat and killed because of extreme discrimination. I would have to say so far The Power of One is the best movie I’ve watched in Global Ed. it really helped me open my eyes to the prejudice in Africa and the conflicted between the Afrikaners and the British.
2. My Christmas Traditions are all based on my family and extended family. Each year I anxiously await the arrival of my cousins, aunts, and uncles, from Ohio, Indiana, and Florida. I look forward to spending Christmas Eve and Christmas morning with my cousins from Indiana, but this year was a little different and I didn’t feel the same. My cousins Abby, Kaleigh, and Faith along with my Aunt Lori and Uncle Mike were flying in on Christmas morning this year so I wouldn’t be spending the morning ripping presents open with them this year and it just didn’t feel right not keep that same old tradition. Every Christmas we always eat the same thing Beef Tenderloin, Green beans, and Mashed potatoes and to tell you the truth I am kind of getting sick of it. The best part about my Christmas tradition is the cookies my grandma makes the best lemon bars and Russian teacakes. Before dinner we always toast to a Merry Christmas with Champagne and sparkling grape juice. After dinner my family and I go upstairs and gather around the tree and exchanges cousin gifts. Every year each cousin picks one cousins name out of a hat and gets them a gift this year I got Abby. I got her a gift cards to Target and Sephora. Faith got me this year I got a real Diamond necklace from Juicy! Christmas with my family doesn’t just last one day. The day after Christmas we celebrate again with my Papa and have lunch and give my grandpa gifts from each family. One of the most important thing I do over Christmas is go to holiday mass with my family.
3. This year I rang in the New Year with Erin with a lot of screaming and laughing.
We spend the whole night looking forward to the ball drop and the New Year to put behind 2009 and say hello to 2010. All we eat and drank that whole night was a lot of Mountain Dew and chips. Healthy I know? I am really going to miss 2009 a lot of big fun events happened that year like my first day of high school and homecoming. 2009 was one great year let me tell you I met so may new friends and teachers and had a great time going to school events. I am also really glad to be leaving last year behind as well. I am really happy to be leaving behind the first semester as baby freshmen and coming back being closer to sophomore year. I am also happy leaving behind a few poor test and quiz grades and starting off fresh with a new semester. I can’t wait to start the new semester with brand new electives and classes. I am really looking forward to starting Foods one as one of my new electives. I am really happy that gym will be ending this year I am so glad I got it over with. One resolution I came up with this New Year is working hard and getting good grades in all my classes especially Geometry. I would like to keep up with a resolution I came up with last year which would have to be eating healthy and staying active.

10 Things Iam Thankful For
1. One thing I am very thankful for is my home. I know there are many people out there less fortunate then me who do not own homes. I am very thankful for my home that keeps me warm and comfortable during the winters and cool and happy during the summers.
2. I am very thankful for my family even though they can be embarrassing at times. I am most thankful for my family because of all the love we share. I can honestly say I would be lost without my goofy and sometimes embarrassing family by my side.
3. I am thankful for my friends who are by my side through the thick and thin. I am thankful for all the good times that I have with my friends. I am even thankful for those rough times that me and my friends go through because they always end happily.
4. I am very thankful for my education as crazy as that many sound. I know that there are many people out there less educated as me who can’t benefit as greatly as I can in the future. I am thankful for my education because I know it will help me in the upcoming future.
5. I am thankful for the seasons because they are filled with holidays and events. I am thankful for the seasons because they bring joy and long awaited breaks like summer and winter vacation.
6. I am thankful for my mom and dad for bringing me into this world. I am very thankful for them even though they get on my nerves sometimes. They give me love and care which is the best thing of all.
7. I am thankful for vacations because we all need a break sometimes. I am thankful I get to enjoy and afford a vacation every once in awhile.
8. I am thankful for today’s technology because life would be really boring without T.V. or computer. I am glad we have technology like we do today because it helps me out with so many things like homework and entertainment.
9. I am thankful for nature because my life would be boring to look at without nature around me. It makes everything pretty and enjoyable to look at most of the time.
10. Lastly I am thankful for my personality because how boring would it be if everyone was the same. I am thankful to be an individual and not the same as everyone else around me.

a semester full of new things
Old Friend, New Friends
So far during this new school year I have made many new friends and gotten back with some of my old middle school friends. I remember my first day of school here at Stevenson thinking that I wasn’t going to make any new friends boy was I wrong. Many of the new people I have met this year are in my Global Ed classes like Sara and Taylor.
SHS Activities Attended
Stevenson has so many fun activities it’s really hard not to miss one of them. Some of the activities I have attended this year were Invisible Children and Night on the Field. I have also attended many of the Football games this season.
Funniest, Weirdest, Scariest Moments
So far the scarcest moment this year was my first day of high school. Other then my first day of high school tryouts for volleyball were pretty scary too but, in the end I made the team. The funniest and the weirdest moments have been mostly with me and my friends.
Hardest, Easiest, class and Assignments
I have a lot of academic classes this semester. The hardest class or should I say classes I have this year is Global Ed. Just because it involves a lot of writing and work. My easiest class that I take is gym.
Top Five Current Events
I would have to say the latest news stories would have to be the health care reform, the budget plan for schools, the new section of the Supreme Court meeting, President Obama speech on education, and the Noble Prize winners.
Faces in the news
The face that I have seen most in the news is President Obama. I think this is because of the health care reform. He has given many speeches on varies topics that have been televised also.
Interesting new words
This is a hard one to answer. I have learned so many new and interesting words this year thanks to Ms. Van Horn. Precarious is one of the newest words I’ve learned this semester. It means to a certain circumstance beyond ones control.
Popular songs
Oh my gosh there has been so many new songs out lately I can’t keep track of all of them. I would have to say my favorite song that’s out is Party in the USA by Miley Cyrus. Some other popular songs out right now are Poker Face, You Belong With Me, and One Time.
Rumors and Gossip
I haven’t really heard a lot of rumors or gossip lately I am not really into that whole thing. I’ve been hearing a lot of rumors about people having Swine Flu and it’s really annoying me.
Fads and Trends
There are so many styles out right now it’s hard to keep track of all of them. I think flannel is really in this year for boys and girls. Everywhere I go I see flannel like in target, kohl’s, and the mall. I think yoga pants and UGHs are really in for girls this year. I see a lot of girls at school and in the hallways wearing yoga pants and UGHs.
First Cultural Event
I attended the Detroit Zoo for my cultural event in September. I remember learning a lot that day and I really didn’t think I would. I learned everything from when the zoo was made to who founded it. I showed what I learned with a creative display and it turned out looking very nice.
Homecoming
Homecoming was of thee best nights of my life. For Homecoming I went in a big group with fourteen of my friends. We took pictures at Pat Lee’s house and then after wards we all piled into the limo we rented and went to Plymouth Crossing for dinner.
Advice for freshmen
The biggest advice I can give right now is just be yourself when you go to high school its one of the easiest ways to find friends. Also don’t act like you don’t know what you’re doing on your first day of school cause then upper class men will know you’re a freshmen and just make fun of you more trust me.
What I’m looking forward to
I’m looking forward to a lot of Global Ed. Parties and events along with dances. I really hope we have a glow out dance this year because I heard they are really fun. I am also looking forward to a lot of Global Ed. Events to meet more people and have a lot of fun.

Culture
American Culture Katy Gabrish
American culture I believe is made up of a mix of all kinds of different ethnicity and backgrounds. We all help make up our own American culture and the things that define it. One thing that I think is a big part of American culture is food and clothing. American teens are always in to the next fashion statement and wanting the next new thing. Our clothes define us and our culture in many ways. Food is also a big way to describe American culture. In American it always seems like we are always in a rush and don’t have time to eat a home cooked meal so that’s were fast food comes in. Fast food is a big American past time because it’s fast and affordable. We are always trying to find the cheapest ways to afford things, not to mention some peoples love for fired food. Another thing that I think defines American culture is our holidays. We have a lot of holidays that celebrate our independence, freedom and rights. We have holidays like Presidents Day, Fourth of July, Flag Day, and Constitution Day. Even the way we live defines our culture like many of us live in a city or a suburb.
My own culture is a mix of a lot of different backgrounds and cultures. My family’s culture consists of Irish, Italian, and Polish backgrounds. My Grandma Gabrish is one hundred percent Italian. I learned from my grandma a lot about cooking Italian foods. I learned how to make spaghetti and veal. On my mom’s side of the family we are mostly Irish and Polish. My Grandpa is very polish. My family every Easter prepares a polish feast. We make pirogues, lamb, kielbasa, and polish meatballs. Lastly I have many Irish traditions like going to the St. Patrick’s Day Parade every year and dressing in head to toe green. My culture defines me and my traditions. I am proud to be Irish, Italian, and polish but I am also proud to be American.
